Our Philosophy

We have entered a distressing new phase in our expansive existence on this planet. As a whole, humanity’s continuous wasteful, negligent, and ignorant views on how we’ll surely be able to sustain this comfortable way of life is preposterous; and it’s insulting to the many people who are trying to plot a new course in our cultural drift toward this dire straight.
On a positive note, more and more people are turning the corner and no longer shrugging off these issues as some inconsequential problem science will fix in the future. In retrospect, our immortal view of ourselves and our planet were a product of the time; and for the first time, a more collective desire for change is finally starting to form a type of cooperative self-consciousness.
Any significant change to our ways has up to this point been impossible – because there has been nothing to push it, nothing to scare people into caring.
These days, however, more people are beginning to look at the whole picture – including us. Halifax Retro isn’t written by environmental extremists. We don’t go out planting trees in our free time and have even been known to buy food that isn’t organic once in a while. We recycle, we re-use, we enjoy gardening and love nature, and we know there is more we can do.
We graduated from St. Mary’s University and wrote for the student newspaper, The Journal, for 3 years. We have degrees in English, Business, and other Arts. We hope that through Halifax Retro, our readers can learn with us - learn about people and organizations making a difference, while bringing attention to those that could make a difference, but choose not to; learn how to properly recycle and live more naturally; learn how to conserve energy and how to create your own everyday things out of otherwise useless materials; learn how to garden, how to live locally and become more in touch with nature. We want to act as a vehicle for awareness and change by showing it isn’t too late to learn about these things now, as we are all in this together. We also encourage people to contribute their own thoughts, ideas and writing to Halifax Retro regarding all these matters, because a sustainable publication cannot be sustained by just a few people. We need your help.
We are going to Europe for the entirety of the summer and plan to blog about are journey. We plan to live on several organic farms through an organization called WWOOF, and we’ll be documenting our learning curve on how we are attempting to live for the earth, and not just on it.
